What is metrology?

Metrology is the science that studies and standardizes measurements, dimensions, capacities and other magnitudes. This comes to say that metrology determines why a liter is that volume or because a meter measures what it measures.

In order to use the same vocabulary and quantities all over the world, we have the ISO language, which determines which international units should be used by everyone. For example, to measure lengths, the international unit is the meter, to measure time, the international unit is the second, and so on with all measurable elements.

Types of metrology

To begin with, 3 fields can be distinguished in metrology:

  • Metrology in science.
  • Legal metrology.
  • Industrial metrology (we are going to talk about this here).

And the areas of action of industrial metrology are:

  • Thermal metrology.
  • Mass metrology.
  • Dimensional metrology.
  • Chemical metrology

It is not necessary to define each one as they are well differentiated from each other. In any case, we will see below with which devices we can work in each area.

What is metrology used for in industry?

Metrology is a science that is not given the importance it has in our society and in our day to day, since without it we could not have electrical appliances at home since the voltage would not be regulated and they would burn, we would not know how far away a place is, we would not know if it is cold in the street or not, and it could be like that all day.

Metrology is used for everything and without it our lives would be very different, without it I could not be writing this or you reading it.

How is metrology interpreted?

To verify a dimension or a weight, for example, we need devices that tell us the values we are looking for. To measure a distance we can use a meter or to know a weight, we can use a scale. These devices give us values and with them we can check their characteristics.
